The South African National Antarctic Programme -2012-2014

the Department of Science and Technology has identified five areas for long-term research, commensurate with additional funding, which represent a comparative advantage for South Africa. These are the following: Astronomy and Earth Observation, Indigenous knowledge, Bioscience/bio-resources, Palaeontology and Antarctic Islands and Oceans. Therefore in adding to the renewal of the South African National Antarctic Programme, the DST vision is to create a demographically balanced Antarctic research programme that strives for internationally competitive research, promotes interdisciplinarity and creates links with other African countries. Support is primarily awarded to students at post-diploma, postgraduate and postdoctoral levels. Student assistantships are also available for grant-holders’ students in their final (R8 000 p.a.) and/or Honours (R25 000 p.a.) years.

• Rated and unrated researchers can apply for three years of funding in this call. • Self-directed project proposals can be submitted under the following 6 science areas: Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, Oceanographic Sciences, Physical Sciences and the Social Sciences, Law and Humanities. -All South African citizens are eligible.
