PhD Position in Bio-based Materials Engineering at University of Freiburg, Germany

In a project financed by the Robert-Bosch Foundation and the Institute for Forest Utilization, on “Sustainable use of forest resources as nano-scale building blocks for functional biocomposites and devices”, we are deve-loping new materials that are based on the combination of components derived from wood-pulps and bio-based polymers. These composite materials will find new applications in papers, coatings, construction, adhe-sives, membranes, optical active materials, barrier layers for packaging, advanced textiles and fibers. One of the biggest challenges in the further exploitation of bio-based materials is the specific control over processing parameters in relation to their structural properties and final performance. Therefore, new research will be initiated in the field of polymer engineering including the formulation and characterization of bio-based nanocomposite materials. We will specifically focus on different interface phenomena for improving the homogeneity and compatibility of composite materials and the possibilities to produce them under relevant conditions.

Applications including a Letter of Motivation together with CV, one Reference Letter and copy of certificates should be sent electronically to institut-at-fobawi.uni-freiburg.de.

We are looking for a self-motivated Ph.D. student with interest in innovative research at the interface of Chemistry, Materials sciences and Mechanical testing. Suitable candidates should have a M.Sc. preferable in Macromolecular Chemistry, Polymer Science or Materials Engineering with broad interest in multidisciplinary research. The candidate will be offered an excellent research environment with access to new equipment, and will be involved in the further development of our research field.
