PhD Position in Basic Medical Sciences at Ghent University, 2011, Belgium

The project will be based on biophysical approaches including single channel recordings in isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes and action potential measurements in multicellular preparations as well as intact heart. A major part of the work will be devoted to characterizing the regulation (by cytoplasmic calcium and others) of cardiac connexin hemichannels and to explore the potential contribution of these channels as an arrthymogenic substrate. Significant efforts will be directed to distinguishing connexin hemichannel unitary currents in single cardiomyocytes from other classic ion channels (f.e. sodium, potassium and chloride channels). -Interested candidates should preferentially have a biological, biochemical or biomedical background (master degree) with grades. -We look for a motivated and ambitious candidate with strong interests in fundamental pre-clinical studies. -Interest in electrophysiological investigations is necessary. -Genuine interest in the subject, research-driven motivation and dedication are necessary elements.
